University of North Carolina Field Hockey Star goes to Australia to play field hockey

Emma Bozek allow field hockey to take her from the USA to Australia for a season abroad

Right now, one of our very first Uru athletes is on her way to Australia, where an experience of a different and competitive style of hockey, new friends, and an exciting culture awaits her. Keep reading to hear how Emma Bozek coordinated her stint abroad!

Emma Bozek is an American hockey player coming off of some stellar years playing for the University of North Carolina Tarheels in the United States. She is a former member of both the Under-17 and Under-21 National Teams, and she represented the U.S. at the Junior World Cup in 2013. While on the Junior National Team and heading off to the Junior World Cup, she met her then-teammate Ainsley McCallister, Uru’s Founder.

Later when Ainsley was playing abroad in Australia, one of her teammates unfortunately had a season-ending injury, tearing her Achilles. Ainsley and her Australian teammates were contacting players they knew at random who could come be a replacement. Ainsley reached out to Bozek to see if she could come last minute to join the team, but she was in the midst of an internship in Chicago.

This anecdote perfectly describes an issue that is constantly repeating in the athletic world: though there are thousands of players looking to compete abroad, Ainsley’s team could not find anyone to replace their injured teammate because there was no systematic way to contact interested players.

If you look on Bozek’s UNC athlete profile, it reads that after she graduates, she

Hopes to continue to play field hockey internationally

Well, through working with the Uru Sports team and utilizing some serious motivation to accomplish her goals, she’s on her way to do just that! On using the Uru Sports app, Bozek relays that,

I used the app to reach out to teams in Australia. It was my communication platform with each of these organizations, resulting in me finding my fit.

She also specifically corresponded with Founder Ainsley McCallister to discuss different leagues and locations to compete in, season dates and structures, the important things to look for in a club, and many more vital aspects to consider when going abroad. In highlighting this, players looking to play abroad are faced with many opportunities in multiple countries, and finding the right fit based off of little information can be confusing and difficult.

Through Uru Sports, Bozek is on her way to Australia to play for the Aquinas Hockey Club, a premier level team in Perth, which she can say is the right place for her. Plus, she has quite a good idea what to expect when her plane touches down after that long flight having been able to communicate with experienced international players who’ve gone before her and her coaches.

Bozek has been busy preparing for her trip. She tells us that some procrastination had led her to getting her visa close to the deadline, saying,

I was two weeks from stepping on a plane without a visa, so I wouldn’t recommend that other people would take the route I did to getting a visa.

Luckily, she was able to get hers 24 hours after applying and she was able to board her plane earlier this morning!

Why did Bozek pursue playing oversea?

Bozek has some inspiring wisdom on why players should take the LEAP. Why did she decide to pursue an abroad opportunity? We asked, and she said,

Well I’m really not ready to put down my stick just yet and I’m dying to experience travel and something new! That said, I’m definitely looking to play for fun while still being competitive.

Now, she’ll get to explore amazing new places while playing the sport she loves and improving her game!

Furthermore, in America, as well as in other parts of the world, there is a good amount of social pressure to chase a big-salaried job directly after one’s education is wrapped up. As a result, it’s often difficult for many players to reconcile their athletic ambitions against society’s mantra of the “right professional move”. Bozek certainly experienced that pressure, as she tells us,

A lot of my friends are moving out and getting their first jobs and making money, and I will be honest I felt a little left out. But as I’m telling people about what I’m doing, everyone who has jobs is super jealous, and I can work for the rest of my life.

There are so many open field hockey positions overseas, use Uru to connect with the best one for you!

In a nutshell, why not? The opportunities to play abroad are endless, and when you play overseas they only continue to multiply, no matter if that’s in your personal life, future athletic career, business ventures, and so much more. Does it take a Leap of faith? Like all things, yes, but it’s one that’s been planned, communicated, and researched all through Uru Sports.

The Uru Sports team was so happy to assist Emma Bozek in planning her season playing field hockey overseas, and we want to wish her all the best while playing for the Reds in Perth.
